BENEFITS OF DERMAPLANING FACIALS

BENEFITS OF DERMAPLANING FACIALS

Though dermaplaning has been around for a few decades, it seems to be taking the internet and our social feeds by storm in recent years. Some boast that the practice is the secret behind the glowing skin of many celebrities while others claim that it could leave you with thick, dark hair on your face. So what is the truth? And what is a dermaplaning facial exactly? As with anything, you can’t always trust what you read on the internet and it can be hard to find reputable information. That’s why we interviewed our Kate Somerville skin care clinic esthetician, Michelle Freese, to get the details about the mysterious dermaplaning facial everyone seems to be talking about these days. Plus, we’ll also share our top exfoliation tips fom Michelle herself!

What is Dermaplaning?

A dermaplaning facial is a non-invasive treatment that exfoliates the top layer of dead skin cells and removes fine vellus hairs to reveal smooth, glowing skin. Dermaplaning consists of a tool with a small, circular blade attached to a handle. The blade is glided across the face in feather-like strokes to remove dead surface cells, vellus hairs and exfoliate the uppermost layer of the skin. The skin will appear brighter, smoother and more even in tone. Benefits of dermaplaning include: • Removes fine vellus hairs and surface dead skin cells • Improves the appearance of dull, uneven or acne-prone skin • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles • Stimulates collagen production for firmer, younger-looking skin • Can reduce hyperpigmentation

Dermaplaning vs. Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a procedure that uses a rotating sharp blade to remove the top layer of skin to improve the appearance of scars and wrinkles. Dermabrasion can be done at a dermatologist’s office or as part of a spa treatment. A dermaplaning session is a noninvasive procedure in which a device with a small metal blade is used to gently exfoliate the topmost layer of skin. Similar to microdermabrasion, dermaplaning involves the use of a device to remove the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresh, healthy skin. However, unlike microdermabrasion, dermaplaning does not rely on abrasive particles to slough off dead cells. Rather, it uses a small metal blade to gently exfoliate the topmost layer of skin. There are no chemicals involved and no downtime is required. Dermaplaning can be performed at home or at a spa as part of an overall skincare routine. It involves gently exfoliating the skin with a metal blade or dermaplaning device by moving it in small, circular motions across the face. Dermaplaning can be used on all skin types, but it is especially suited for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. It removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores, leaving behind fresh, smooth skin that feels soft and supple.
